PPP and PML-N Move to Ease Coalition Tensions

LAHORE, September 13, 2026 : The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have renewed efforts to address differences affecting their coalition partnership, with senior representatives from both parties holding consultations aimed at improving coordination, rebuilding mutual confidence and ensuring greater cooperation on governance and political matters amid growing concerns over economic and public policy challenges.

A coalition meeting in Lahore

The coordination committees of the two coalition partners met in Lahore following months of strained relations, particularly after politically contentious election campaigns in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan . The discussions provided an opportunity for both sides to raise outstanding concerns, review previously agreed decisions and explore mechanisms for improving communication between the parties as they continue to share responsibility for maintaining political stability.

The PPP delegation comprised former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, Hassan Murtaza , Qamar Zaman Kaira and Ali Qasim Gilani , while the PML-N delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq , Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah and Khawaja Saad Rafique .

Public pressure over economic issues

During the meeting, PPP representatives conveyed concerns regarding the political consequences of several issues facing the public, including inflation, rising petroleum prices, difficulties confronting the farming community, electricity load-shedding and delays associated with local government elections. The party maintained that although it remains a coalition partner, it has faced political pressure over problems that have generated considerable public dissatisfaction.

The PML-N, meanwhile, emphasized that the PPP should continue to operate as a coalition partner and share responsibility for the government’s broader policy direction rather than adopting positions that could create the impression of opposition politics. The party also pointed out that several economic pressures, particularly fluctuations in international petroleum prices and inflationary trends, are influenced by factors beyond the government’s immediate control.

PML-N's argument on shared responsibility

Despite differences during the discussions, both sides recognized the importance of maintaining cooperation and avoiding developments that could undermine the functioning of the coalition. The PML-N also arranged for Punjab Inspector General of Police Rao Abdul Karim to brief the PPP delegation on police-related concerns, while assurances were given regarding the PPP’s participation in development initiatives.

PPP representatives, however, raised concerns over previous commitments relating to police matters and development schemes, observing that some decisions agreed upon earlier had not been implemented effectively. The issue highlighted the trust deficit that has developed between the coalition partners and the need for a more reliable mechanism to ensure that decisions reached during consultations are followed through within agreed timelines.

Trust deficit and earlier commitments

The two parties subsequently agreed to strengthen their consultation process, hold coordination meetings more regularly and work toward implementing earlier decisions. Both sides also expressed a willingness to address coalition-related matters through dialogue and mutual understanding while keeping broader national interests at the center of their political engagement.

The renewed consultations are taking place against a backdrop of continuing political debate over governance, economic pressures and constitutional matters, including discussions surrounding the possible creation of new provinces. The PPP has previously called for any restructuring of the country’s federating units to follow the constitutional procedure, while the Sindh government has opposed further division of the existing provinces through a resolution adopted by the Sindh Assembly.

Why the partnership still matters

The relationship between the PPP and PML-N remains significant for the stability of the federal government, as the PML-N-led administration relies on the PPP’s support in parliament. Continued coordination between the two parties is therefore considered important for maintaining legislative cooperation and ensuring that political disagreements do not disrupt governance.

The latest meeting reflects an effort by both coalition partners to move beyond recent political tensions and establish a more structured working relationship, with regular dialogue, implementation of previous commitments and coordinated responses to public concerns emerging as key elements of their renewed engagement.
