Deputy Chief Frank Barredo of the Toronto Police Service confirmed that at least two individuals were inside the consulate when the shot was fired. Three suspects were eventually arrested in connection with that case, though the investigation took a tragic turn in June.

The suspects currently in custody are aged 18 and 19. The proximity of these incidents has drawn sharp rebuke from high-ranking officials.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a statement expressing his disgust regarding the wave of violence impacting the city. Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the situation as appalling, affirming that the federal government remains in full support of the ongoing investigation. The RCMP, working alongside international law enforcement partners, has joined the effort to identify the individuals in the white Honda Accord. In May, US authorities apprehended Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi, an Iraqi national suspected of planning more than a dozen separate attacks against North American and European Jewish institutions and American diplomatic interests. While the US consulate in Toronto was explicitly named as a target in that planning, Toronto police have not yet disclosed whether they consider al-Saadi or his associates to be involved in this most recent incident.

The investigation is far from over, as forensic teams analyze the recovered casing and pore over security footage from the vicinity.
