Police in Multan have arrested a suspect and registered a murder case after a 15-year-old boy died in an alleged car incident inside a private housing society. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and questioning people connected with the teenager's work placement as they seek to establish the circumstances that led to his death.
Police examine CCTV footage
The victim, identified as Waseem, was from Muzaffargarh and had been living at an orphanage operated by a non-governmental organisation.
According to Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq, the orphanage administration had taken the teenager to a man identified as Tauqeer around seven days before the incident so he could receive training in electrical work. Police said the suspect had previously carried out electrical work at several buildings.
Investigators said CCTV footage appeared to show Tauqeer following Waseem in a car after the teenager left the house. The boy was allegedly running away when he was struck by the vehicle. Police said they had not found evidence linking Waseem to theft and were still investigating what caused the confrontation.
The suspect was taken into custody and a murder case was registered. The allegations have not yet been tested in court, and the investigation remains under way.
Orphanage placement also under review
Police have detained members of the orphanage administration for questioning to determine how Waseem came to be living with the suspect and whether there were concerns surrounding the work-training arrangement.
CPO Farooq said children from the institution had previously been sent to the suspect for training. Investigators are therefore examining the placement process and the responsibilities of those involved in arranging it.
The inquiry is expected to consider the teenager's living conditions, the nature of the training arrangement and the events immediately before the alleged car incident.
Funeral held in Muzaffargarh
Following the incident, Waseem's relatives took his body to his native area. Funeral prayers were held before he was buried in the ancestral graveyard in Daultpur village. Close relatives and representatives of the orphanage were reported to have attended.
Police said further action would depend on evidence collected during the investigation. The case remains active, with investigators reviewing CCTV material, witness accounts and the circumstances surrounding Waseem's placement with the suspect.
