KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange extended its recovery on Wednesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index crossing the 180,000-point mark as investors responded to falling international oil prices and softer geopolitical tensions, according to Dawn Business and market analysts cited in the report.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange opened the session with strong buying interest and held firm in positive territory throughout the day. The index touched an intraday high before closing at 180,014, up 2,931 points or 1.66 per cent. Market participants said the rally reflected renewed confidence in the outlook for equities, helped by expectations that lower oil prices could ease inflationary pressure and support Pakistan's external account.

What drove the Pakistan Stock Exchange rally?

Topline Securities Ltd said bullish sentiment dominated the session, with investors encouraged by improving geopolitical relations between the United States and Iran. The company also linked the advance to a continued decline in global oil prices, which helped trigger broad-based buying across major sectors.

Ali Najib, deputy head of trading at Arif Habib Ltd, described the move as a strong recovery rally. He said international oil prices had fallen more than 9 per cent since Tuesday's peak, while optimism had grown over the resumption of US-Iran talks and the possibility of a diplomatic resolution.

Key stocks that supported the index

The report said several heavyweight names made the biggest contribution to the index's gain. Habib Bank, United Bank, Meezan Bank, Engro Holdings, Fauji Fertiliser, MCB Bank, Lucky Cement, Systems Ltd, Hub Power and Fatima Fertiliser were among the top contributors, together adding 1,906 points to the benchmark.

The move came against the backdrop of broader market confidence tied to moderating inflationary pressure and a stronger economic outlook. The report also noted that Pakistan has reportedly requested China to refinance a $1.3 billion commercial loan, with funds expected later this month once the terms are finalised.

Why investors are watching oil and geopolitics

For Pakistan Stock Exchange investors, lower oil prices can be important because they may ease pressure on import costs and inflation. That combination can improve sentiment in the banking, fertiliser, cement and power sectors, all of which featured among the day's major gainers.

At the same time, easing tension in the Middle East can reduce uncertainty for global markets and support risk appetite in emerging markets such as Pakistan.

The latest advance adds to the recent momentum in local equities, with Wednesday's session showing that traders remain sensitive to developments in oil markets, regional diplomacy and Pakistan's external financing outlook.

Outlook

The Pakistan Stock Exchange closed at a fresh level above 180,000, underlining the strength of the day’s buying interest. For now, the rally appears to be driven more by improved sentiment than by any single domestic catalyst, with oil prices and US-Iran developments continuing to steer trading.
