Robotics startup Enigma has emerged from stealth with a seed round of just over $70 million and an unusual public pitch: instead of chasing ever more capable robot hardware, the company wants to solve how ordinary people actually talk to machines.
Who is behind it
Enigma was founded by Jonathan Jacobi, a former Microsoft employee, and Gal Niv, less than a year before the company's July announcement. The founding team draws heavily from Israel's tech ecosystem, including alumni of established AI research labs and winners of competitive math competitions, a recruiting pattern common among ambitious AI labs looking to build technically dense early teams.
Who's paying for it
The seed round was led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, with additional participation from Conviction Partners, the fund led by Sarah Guo. A $70 million-plus seed round is an unusually large bet at such an early stage, signalling that investors see the interface problem Enigma is targeting as a genuine bottleneck rather than a minor usability issue.
The problem Enigma says it's solving
Rather than framing its mission around raw AI model capability, the company is focused on how people naturally want to communicate with robots. As one line from the team put it, describing the current state of the field: "Right now, everyone is at that point, even with the most capable models," pointing to widespread frustration with robot control regardless of how advanced the underlying AI has become. Enigma's pitch is that making control intuitive, "as easy as adjusting the volume," matters as much as the sophistication of the robot itself.
A public experiment with real robots
To make its case, Enigma is launching a large-scale public experiment giving people worldwide the ability to interact with more than 100 AI-powered robots housed in hangars in Israel and California. The robots are capable of tasks including drawing, sword fighting and running chemistry experiments, a deliberately varied task list meant to stress-test different modes of interaction rather than optimise for a single narrow use case.
Testing every way humans might want to communicate
The platform is built to test multiple communication methods side by side, including text commands, audio instructions, video-based examples and gesture-based controls. That breadth suggests Enigma is still gathering data on which interaction style actually works best for non-expert users, rather than committing to a single interface and building outward from it.
Early commercial interest
Despite being less than a year old, Enigma says it is already partnering with companies across healthcare, logistics and entertainment, though specific applications and partner names remain undisclosed. The scale of interest, even without public details, suggests industries beyond consumer robotics see value in whatever interface layer Enigma is building.
With a public experiment now live and industries already lining up before the technology has even been fully unveiled, Enigma's bet is that the next breakthrough in robotics won't come from smarter machines alone, but from finally making those machines simple enough for anyone to direct without training.
The size of the seed round suggests investors are willing to bet on that interface-first thesis well before Enigma has proven it commercially, a sign of how much appetite remains for robotics startups willing to tackle the unglamorous but practical problem of usability rather than chase headline-grabbing hardware demonstrations alone.
