Meta has begun rolling out its Meta AI chatbot inside Threads' direct messages, giving users a way to have private, one-on-one conversations with the assistant rather than interacting with it only in public posts. What changes for Threads users
Until now, Meta AI's presence on Threads was largely confined to the public feed, where the company had been testing AI-generated replies and posts in a handful of markets. The DM integration extends that presence into private messaging, letting users open a chat with Meta AI the same way they would message another person.
Inside those conversations, users can share Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly with the assistant and ask follow-up questions to dig deeper into a topic. Meta has framed the feature as a way to explore ideas found while browsing Threads without leaving the app, whether that's asking for more context on a news post or a simple explainer on a subject that comes up in a shared link.
Part of a broader ecosystem push
The move brings Threads in line with the rest of Meta's app family. Meta AI has already been built into direct messages on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and the Threads rollout closes one of the last gaps in that strategy. Analysts see the push as an attempt to keep users engaging with Meta's own AI assistant rather than switching to competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini for quick questions that arise during everyday app use.
By embedding the assistant directly where people already spend time chatting, Meta reduces the friction of switching apps to get an AI-generated answer, a strategy the company has pursued consistently across its platforms over the past two years.
Opt-out options for users who don't want it
Not every Threads user wants an AI assistant showing up in their messages or feed, and Meta has built in several ways to dial back the exposure. Users who prefer fewer AI interactions can mute the @meta.ai account outright, select "Not interested" on posts generated or surfaced by Meta AI, or hide AI-generated replies that appear on their own posts.
Those controls mirror the opt-out mechanisms Meta has offered on its other apps, suggesting the company is aware that not every rollout of this kind is welcomed uniformly by its user base, even as it continues to push AI features deeper into its core products.
Threads' evolving identity
The DM integration also says something about where Meta sees Threads heading strategically. Launched initially as a text-based alternative to X, Threads has steadily accumulated features that mirror capabilities already present elsewhere in Meta's app family, from algorithmic feed changes to, now, an embedded AI assistant in private messaging. Rather than positioning Threads as a stripped-down, conversation-first alternative to its sibling apps, Meta increasingly appears to be treating it as another full surface for the same AI-first product strategy the company has applied across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, betting that consistency across its portfolio outweighs any advantage Threads might gain from differentiating itself as a simpler, AI-free space.
