A school shooting in Thailand has left seven people dead, including the suspected gunman, and 15 others injured, according to police and government officials cited by Dawn Home and Reuters.
The attack happened on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok. A national police spokesman, Lt. Col. Trirong Phophan, said the suspect was a student who opened fire at the school before turning the gun on himself.
Students were seen leaving the campus as emergency crews responded and the injured were taken to ambulances. Teachers were described as hugging and crying amid the chaos. Photos circulated by emergency workers showed injured people being treated outside ambulances.
An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially mistook the shots for firecrackers or someone striking an object. He said the gunfire came in bursts before stopping and starting again.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called the incident terrible and said it should never have happened in the country. Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said both teachers and students were among those reported dead.
Police identified the attacker as a student. The shooting is the second at a Thai school this year, following a separate incident in the south in February in which a teacher was killed and a student injured.
Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team arrived while the shooting was still underway and treated students with wounds to the back, chest and arms. He said workers also found a male teacher dead on an upper floor and a female teacher with injuries in another room.
