Russia's growing use of jet-powered attack drones is forcing Ukraine to rethink parts of its air-defense network, as faster unmanned aircraft reduce the time available to detect, track and intercept incoming strikes.
A faster drone problem
Ukraine has spent years building layered defenses against slower Shahed-style drones. Mobile fire groups, electronic warfare, short-range systems and interceptor drones helped Ukrainian forces blunt many mass attacks at a lower cost than firing advanced missiles at every target.
The new jet-powered systems complicate that model. Current open-source assessments describe Russian Geran-4 and Geran-5 variants as faster and higher-flying than the propeller-driven drones Ukraine has learned to counter. Some reported characteristics place them in the 400 to 600 kilometres-per-hour range, with operating altitudes that can reach several kilometres.
Lower interception rates
The practical effect is already showing up in Ukrainian reporting. Critical Threats and the Institute for the Study of War cited Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat saying Ukraine intercepts standard piston-engine drones at roughly 90 to 95 percent, while the interception rate against jet-powered drones is closer to 60 percent.
That gap matters. Even if most drones are still stopped, a lower interception rate means more aircraft can slip through during large raid packages. It also forces Ukraine to spend more attention, ammunition and specialist equipment on each wave.
Geran variants and payloads
The Geran-5 has been described in open reporting as a jet-powered strike drone with characteristics closer to a small cruise missile than the older Shahed-style platform. Critical Threats noted earlier Ukrainian military intelligence reporting that the Geran-5 could carry a warhead of about 90 kilograms and fly up to roughly 1,000 kilometres.
Reuters reporting on the mini jet-engine market also described Russia's jet-powered Geran-5 as capable of speeds up to 600 kilometres per hour and payloads around 90 kilograms. Those figures remain open-source assessments, not a complete official technical file, but they explain why Kyiv is treating the threat as a distinct operational problem.
Kyiv feels the pressure
Drone and missile attacks have repeatedly disrupted life in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Air-raid alerts interrupt public transport, business hours, schools and ordinary movement. When faster drones are part of the strike package, the warning and response window can become tighter.
The pressure is not only military. Each raid affects power systems, public confidence, emergency services and the rhythm of daily life. Ukraine has adapted remarkably quickly during the war, but every Russian technical adjustment forces another round of defensive improvisation.
Ukraine's interceptor race
President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed defense authorities and industry to accelerate faster interceptor systems. Ukraine is working with domestic companies and foreign partners on counter-drone tools that can deal with higher speeds and altitudes without relying only on expensive surface-to-air missiles.
That cost question is central. A cheap drone becomes strategically powerful if the defender must use a far more expensive missile to stop it. Ukraine's goal is to find interceptors and tactics that can keep the exchange affordable while still protecting cities and infrastructure.
Air defense has to be layered
Experts argue that faster interceptor drones alone will not solve the problem. Ukraine needs early detection, electronic warfare, mobile groups, combat aviation, missile defenses and better intelligence working together. The more layers a system has, the better chance it has of catching drones before they reach protected urban or infrastructure targets.
Russia's shift also shows how quickly the air war is evolving. When Ukraine improves against one threat, Moscow adapts the drone mix. When Russia changes speed, altitude or guidance, Ukraine has to adjust sensors, interceptors and tactics.
The new drone challenge does not mean Ukraine's air defenses have failed. It means the contest has moved to another level of speed, cost and production. The side that adapts faster will shape how much damage future drone waves can cause, and how expensive it becomes to stop them.
