Europe's Heat Intensifies Wildfire and Smoke Risks
Copernicus data showed exceptional wildfire emissions and hazardous smoke across parts of western Europe after prolonged heat and dry conditions.

Prolonged heat and dry conditions sharply increased wildfire danger across western and southern Europe in July 2026, producing exceptional fire emissions and exposing millions of people to unhealthy smoke.
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service said France's year-to-date wildfire emissions were comparable with or above the extreme years of 2022 and 2023. Spain's emissions were also well above the seasonal average, while European countries activated joint civil-protection assistance.
Nearly 400,000 people needed shelter from fires in France and Spain, according to the service. Spain declared a national emergency, and personnel and equipment from other countries were deployed as local crews faced extensive fire fronts.
Smoke became a regional health threat
Wildfire damage is not confined to the area burned. Fine particles can travel far from a fire and enter the lungs and bloodstream. Copernicus forecasts showed extremely high concentrations of PM2.5 in France, Spain and Algeria during the late-July episode.
Bordeaux recorded peaks slightly above 300 micrograms per cubic metre, a level considered extremely poor or hazardous under European air-quality classifications. For comparison, the European daily exposure benchmark cited by Copernicus is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, subject to limits on how often it may be exceeded.
The service said measurements from regulatory monitoring stations broadly agreed with its forecasts. This combination of satellite observations, atmospheric modelling and ground sensors helps authorities identify where smoke is moving and which communities may need health warnings.
Heat and drought reinforce each other
Europe is warming faster than the global average. Higher temperatures draw moisture from soil and vegetation, leaving more fuel available when a fire begins. Repeated heatwaves can lengthen the season in which a spark develops into a fast-moving emergency.
Copernicus reported that a major fire in southwestern France burned nearly 42,000 hectares and produced the country's largest recorded burned area in the European Forest Fire Information System. July also brought exceptional single-day fire emissions in France.
Climate change does not ignite every blaze, and investigations are still needed to determine individual causes. It does, however, increase the frequency and severity of the hot, dry weather that allows fires to spread rapidly.
What residents should monitor
People near smoke-affected areas should follow local emergency and air-quality alerts. Children, older adults and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions can face greater risks from fine-particle pollution.

The particles are small enough to penetrate deeply into the respiratory system and are associated with serious health effects.
Did the fires affect only France and Spain?
No. Smoke and poor air quality also affected neighbouring areas, including parts of Algeria, and resources were coordinated internationally.

No. Ignition has different causes, but warming and drought create conditions in which fires can become more intense and difficult to control.
Preparedness extends beyond firefighting
Reducing wildfire losses requires fuel management, evacuation planning, resilient electricity networks and public-health preparation for smoke. Authorities also need clear communication when fire conditions cross borders, because atmospheric transport can expose communities far from the flames. Copernicus data supports those decisions but does not replace local instructions. Residents should use municipal alerts for evacuation and national health guidance for smoke exposure. The July episode showed why burned area alone is an incomplete measure: emissions, displacement, air quality and pressure on emergency services all contribute to the true impact of a severe fire season.
