October 1, 2026: Italy has extended temporary controls at its air and maritime borders with Spain for another 15 days, citing continuing concerns linked to the migration situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Italian media reported on Wednesday.
The extension was approved by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi following consultations with the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security, which reviewed the prevailing situation and the circumstances that had prompted Rome to introduce temporary checks along its borders with Spain.
Under the extended measures, Italy will maintain checks on passengers travelling through designated air and maritime entry points connecting the country with Spain, as authorities continue to monitor developments related to irregular migration and border security. The Italian Interior Ministry said the decision was based on the persistence of concerns associated with the situation in Ceuta.
The Italian government has also notified the European Commission and interior ministers of other European Union member states about the extension, reflecting the wider European dimension of migration management and border security within the Schengen area.
The decision comes amid heightened attention to developments in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave located on the North African coast, where authorities have faced significant pressure following a major movement of migrants from Morocco in late July. Spanish government estimates indicated that approximately 72,000 people crossed irregularly into Ceuta on July 30 and 31, creating substantial pressure on local reception and accommodation facilities.
Despite the establishment of temporary accommodation arrangements, thousands of migrants, including a significant number of minors, have remained in difficult circumstances, according to recent estimates. Authorities have also reported that some migrants have been voluntarily returning to Morocco on a daily basis.
