Billionaire Predicts Humans Could Commute to the Moon by the 2030s

Regular travel to the Moon may still sound like science fiction, but space entrepreneur and Voyager Technologies CEO Dylan Taylor believes it could become realistic within the next decade. In comments to Fortune, Taylor said people may be living and working on the Moon by the early 2030s, with lunar travel becoming part of a larger commercial space economy.
Taylor's argument is not simply that more astronauts will visit the Moon. His bigger claim is that the space industry is moving from short trips and symbolic missions toward permanent human activity beyond Earth. In that version of the future, the Moon would not only host explorers, but also engineers, miners, construction workers, robotics teams and support crews building the infrastructure needed for long-term operations.
He has pointed to future work around power systems, data centres, resource extraction and lunar construction. Much of that work could be supported by advanced robots, but Taylor believes humans will still play an important role in decision-making, repair, testing and high-risk tasks where remote control from Earth may not be enough.
Taylor's confidence is shaped by his own path through the commercial space industry. After earlier work in electronics, finance and real estate, he moved more deeply into space exploration and founded Space for Humanity in 2017. He later became involved with Voyager Technologies and travelled to space on a Blue Origin flight in 2021, giving him a personal view of how private companies are changing access to orbit.
His forecast fits into a wider wave of ambitious predictions from billionaires and technology leaders. Elon Musk has repeatedly talked about sending humans to Mars and eventually building a self-sustaining city there. Jeff Bezos has described a future in which millions of people live and work in space. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also suggested that future generations could find high-paying careers away from Earth as space industries mature.
Taylor, however, sees the Moon as a more practical near-term destination than Mars. Mars remains far away, difficult to reach and exposed to serious radiation and logistics problems. Travel windows are limited, communication delays are longer, and any emergency would be far harder to manage. The Moon is still a severe environment, but it is much closer, making transport, rescue planning and supply chains more realistic.
That difference matters for the 2030s timeline. NASA's Artemis programme, commercial lander projects and private launch competition have already pushed companies to think beyond one-off missions. If launch costs keep falling and lunar lander technology improves, regular crew rotations to the Moon could become easier to imagine, even if the word commute still sounds bold.
The economic case is also changing. Space was once mainly the domain of governments, national prestige and scientific agencies. Today, private capital is flowing into launch systems, satellites, space stations, communications, robotics and lunar services. Companies are trying to identify the first profitable markets beyond Earth, and the Moon is often treated as the test ground for that future.
Still, major obstacles remain. A true lunar workplace would need reliable habitats, radiation protection, power generation, life-support systems, landing pads, communications links, medical planning and a way to move equipment safely across harsh terrain. Dust, extreme temperatures and limited local resources make even simple tasks difficult. Any realistic lunar economy will need years of testing before routine travel becomes normal.
There is also a question of scale. A handful of specialists travelling to the Moon for weeks or months would be a major achievement, but it would not yet mean ordinary people are commuting there. The early phase would almost certainly involve trained workers, engineers and scientists rather than mass travel. Over time, if costs fall and infrastructure improves, more roles could open up.
Taylor's prediction is best understood as a signal of where commercial space leaders believe the industry is heading. The Moon is no longer being discussed only as a destination for flags, footprints and historic missions. It is increasingly framed as a place where business, research and strategic competition could meet.
If his vision comes true, the 2030s could mark a turning point in humanity's relationship with the Moon. It would become more than a bright object in the night sky or a memory from the Apollo era. It could become a workplace, a research base and the first real step toward a wider human presence beyond Earth.
