Samsung Fold8 Series Puts AI at Center of Foldables
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 expand its foldable range with lighter hardware, revised displays and AI-assisted productivity features.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold8 series is moving the company's foldable strategy in two directions at once: a larger Ultra model for productivity and a lighter standard Fold designed to make the category easier to use every day.
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8 at its July 2026 Unpacked event in London. The company has positioned artificial intelligence as a central part of all three devices, while continuing to address the weight, thickness, display crease and battery concerns that influence whether consumers adopt foldable phones.
Three devices for different foldable users
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sits at the top of the range. Samsung says it has an 8-inch main display, measures 4.1 millimetres when unfolded and weighs 215 grams. It is intended for users who want a larger workspace for multitasking, editing and content creation.
The standard Galaxy Z Fold8 takes a different approach. At 201 grams, Samsung describes it as the company's lightest Galaxy Z Fold so far. It uses a 4,800mAh battery and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy platform. The cover and internal display ratios have also been adjusted for different tasks, including short-form content, reading, games and video.
Galaxy Z Flip8 remains the compact option. Samsung says it measures 6.1 millimetres when unfolded and weighs about 180 grams. Its outer FlexWindow is designed to surface notifications, weather, schedules and selected controls without requiring the phone to be opened.
AI features move beyond simple chat tools
Samsung's presentation emphasised what it calls agentic AI: software intended to understand a request, work across applications and ask the user to approve important actions. The company's examples include using Gemini to identify a place from a photograph and find nearby accommodation while the owner continues using other apps.
The Fold8 also includes My FanCam, which can follow a selected person in an existing video and automatically reframe the footage around that subject. On the Flip8, Now Brief presents selected information on the cover display, while dual recording can capture the person filming and the subject at the same time.
These examples show how phone makers are trying to make AI part of ordinary device controls rather than a separate chatbot screen. The practical value will depend on reliability, privacy settings, supported languages and how often features work across third-party applications.
Hardware changes target familiar foldable concerns
Foldable phones have improved considerably, but durability and long-term display wear remain important purchasing considerations. Samsung says its Flex Titanium display structure combines a titanium-alloy film with a strengthened plate to support thinner devices, absorb pressure and reduce the visibility of the crease over time.
Those are manufacturer claims and should be evaluated through independent durability testing. Buyers should also consider repair costs, warranty terms and the availability of service in their country before choosing a foldable over a conventional phone.
Battery capacity is another area where design trade-offs remain visible. A folding device has to divide internal space among displays, hinges, cameras and battery cells. Samsung says the standard Fold8 can provide more than 26 hours of video playback, but real-world endurance will vary with brightness, network use, multitasking and AI processing.
What the Fold8 launch means for the market
The three-model lineup gives Samsung a clearer way to segment premium foldables. The Ultra is aimed at buyers willing to pay for the largest workspace and camera capabilities. The standard Fold balances weight and screen size, while the Flip focuses on portability and quick interactions.
Competition will now centre on more than the ability to fold a screen. Software support, repairability, camera performance, battery life and useful AI integration will determine whether consumers see these devices as practical upgrades.
Samsung has supplied the specifications and feature descriptions used in this report through its official newsroom. Independent reviews will provide the next important evidence, particularly on endurance, heat, camera performance and whether the new hinge and display materials deliver the claimed improvements over time.
