Pakistan has seen a marked decline in environmental poliovirus detections during the first six months of 2026, a development that public health officials are treating as encouraging but not conclusive. Data released by the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication shows the positivity rate in environmental samples fell to 13.1 per cent this year from 48.1pc in the same period of 2025. The improvement suggests the virus is being detected less often in sewage and other environmental surveillance points, which are used as an early warning tool to track circulation before cases appear in children. But experts caution that the trend does not mean the threat has passed. Poliovirus can still circulate silently in communities with low immunisation coverage, and any gaps in vaccination or surveillance can allow it to persist. Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Polio Eradication Ayesha Raza Farooq told Dawn the drop was linked to a revised strategy that included external audits, better selection of vaccination teams, stronger training and support from law enforcement agencies. Those measures, she said, helped improve the quality of campaigns and surveillance work. The latest NEOC figures show that in June 2026 alone, 127 environmental samples were collected across the country. Of those, 117 tested negative and 10 were positive. Between January and June, 100 environmental samples were confirmed positive, down from 369 in the same period last year. The provincial picture was also uneven. Punjab reported no positive environmental samples in June, with all 31 samples testing negative. Sindh had one positive sample out of 29, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 30 negative samples out of 34. Balochistan reported 18 negative samples out of 23. That progress, however, sits alongside a familiar concern for Pakistan’s eradication campaign: cross-border movement. A polio expert quoted in the report warned that unmanaged movement from Afghanistan remains a major risk, noting that poliovirus strains linked to Kandahar and Nangarhar were detected in environmental samples collected from Quetta and Peshawar respectively. Such findings are important because they indicate the virus can move across borders and reappear in areas that may otherwise appear to be improving. Environmental surveillance is one part of the broader polio response, alongside routine immunisation and targeted vaccination drives. A drop in sewage detections can reflect stronger population immunity, better campaign execution and improved monitoring. But health officials generally treat it as one piece of evidence rather than a final verdict on eradication efforts. That is especially true in Pakistan, where the polio programme has long faced challenges including missed children, access problems in some areas and the difficulty of sustaining high-quality campaigns across a large and mobile population. The NEOC said the decline in environmental positivity reflected better vaccination coverage and surveillance, but stressed that sustained vigilance remains essential to interrupt virus transmission. For parents and communities, the practical message is straightforward: continued vaccination is still necessary even when headline indicators improve. Environmental data can show progress, but it can also reveal how quickly the virus can persist or return if immunisation efforts weaken. The recent decline is a positive sign for Pakistan’s polio campaign, yet officials appear to be treating it as a step forward rather than the finish line.
