Pakistan has said it is ready to deepen cooperation with Iran across a wide range of areas, according to remarks by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi during talks with his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, who is in Pakistan on an official visit.
The two ministers met on Tuesday for one-on-one discussions followed by delegation-level talks, the interior ministry said in a statement. A guard of honour was presented to the visiting minister by a smartly turned-out contingent of the Federal Constabulary on his arrival.
According to the statement, the meeting covered bilateral ties, trade, regional developments and possible areas of cooperation. Both sides agreed to expand coordination in counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, preventing illegal immigration and combating human trafficking.
Naqvi said Pakistan was prepared to increase cooperation with Iran “in all fields.” He also praised Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Momeni, saying they had made “extraordinary efforts for peace,” and expressed hope that “good news will come soon and peace will be established.”
The two ministers also stressed the need for joint action to curb drug smuggling and terrorism “originating from the Afghan border,” while agreeing to improve coordination between the relevant institutions in both countries.
Momeni arrived in Pakistan on Monday night. During his visit, he also met Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The army’s media wing said the meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, regional and bilateral security, and border management.
He later called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who voiced concern about worsening tensions in the Middle East and reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to serve as an “honest and sincere mediator and facilitator” for regional peace.
The visit comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts to preserve the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed last month between the US and Iran, aimed at ending the conflict that began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran in late February.
