Pakistan's men’s squash team faced another disappointing finish at the Asian Games, falling short of gold and settling for silver after a crushing defeat against Malaysia. The final, held at Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena on Friday, marked the second consecutive runners-up result for Pakistan, mirroring their performance from the previous edition of the Games in Hangzhou.

The Squash Final: A Battle for Gold

First Match Highlights

The showdown began with Pakistan's Nasir Iqbal facing Ameeshenraj Chandaran of Malaysia. Nasir took a quick lead, zooming to a 6-1 advantage. However, Chandaran clawed his way back, narrowing the score to 8-5 and then 9-7. Despite the pressure, Nasir held his nerve and won the opener 11-8, setting a hopeful tone for Pakistan's pursuit of gold.

Shift in Momentum

In the second game, Chandaran demonstrated resilience, rallying from a 2-4 deficit to overwhelm Nasir 11-3, leveling the match at one game apiece. The Malaysian’s confidence surged, and he continued to dominate in the third game, clinching it 11-6 after a tightly contested phase, flipping the match in Malaysia's favor.

Chandaran wasted no time in securing the fourth, finishing strong at 11-4 and giving Malaysia a 1-0 lead in the final. With the pressure on, Pakistan's top-ranked player Noor Zaman had to win his rematch against Malaysia's Eain Yow Ng to keep hopes alive.

The Decider Game

Zaman, facing Ng again after a previous semi-final defeat, pushed the match into five gripping games. After a shaky start, Noor managed to win the third game 11-7, putting Pakistan ahead 2-1. Nevertheless, Ng responded fiercely, taking the fourth game 11-4. Unfortunately for Pakistan, Ng's momentum carried into the final game, where he surged ahead to win 11-4, sealing the gold for Malaysia.

With Malaysia already leading 2-0, Pakistan’s third player, Mohammed Ashab Irfan, remained on the sidelines, confirming Pakistan's second silver medal in as many Asian Games.

Volleyball Hopes Dashed by Iran

In parallel, Pakistan's volleyball team also faced disappointment, ending their campaign in the semi-finals after a decisive 3-0 loss to three-time defending champions Iran at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium.

Ali Usman Faryad led with 11 points, supported by Murad Khan and Afaq Khan with nine and three points, respectively. Despite reaching the semi-finals after a commanding quarter-final victory over India, their efforts fell short against Iran, who dominated key statistics throughout the match:

- Spikes Conversion: Iran - 64% (43 of 68), Pakistan - 34% (27 of 81)

- Block Success Rate: Iran - 32% (15 blocks), Pakistan - 4%

- Digs Percentage: Iran - 64%, Pakistan - 42%

Looking Ahead

As Pakistan's athletic endeavors conclude at the Asian Games, the focus shifts to potential redemption. The volleyball team will aim for a bronze against either Japan or China, while the squash team reflects on another near-miss, continuing their search for the elusive gold medal last achieved in 2010. The journey forward requires not just speed and strength, but also the resilience to bounce back from defeats in pursuit of glory.
