Google Makes Visible AI Watermarks Optional, Keeps SynthID
Google will let users hide visible labels on AI-created images, videos and songs while retaining invisible SynthID markers and C2PA metadata.

Google is giving users the option to remove the visible watermark from media produced by several of its generative artificial-intelligence models. The change applies to images, videos and songs, but it does not remove the company's invisible SynthID signal or provenance information stored through the C2PA standard.
The distinction matters because a clean-looking image will not necessarily be unmarked. Google's visible symbol can be seen without special tools, while SynthID embeds an imperceptible signal designed for software detection. C2PA metadata can record information about how a file was created or edited, although metadata may not survive every export or platform conversion.
Which Google models are included
Google Gemini vice-president Josh Woodward said the option will cover output from Nano Banana, Omni and Lyria. The control is rolling out in Gemini and Google's Flow video editor, with support in Search expected later. Once available, users can find it under Settings and Media Watermark.
The company says the feature will arrive over the coming days rather than appearing for every account at once. Users should therefore avoid assuming that a missing toggle means their account is excluded permanently.
Why creators asked for cleaner output
Visible marks can interfere with professional layouts, video composition, album art and client previews. Designers may need a clean canvas even when they are willing to retain machine-readable provenance. Making the visible layer optional gives them more control without abandoning Google's underlying identification system.
The tradeoff is that ordinary viewers can no longer rely on a corner symbol as an immediate warning. They may need to use Gemini, Search or another compatible verification tool to check for SynthID. A result indicating no Google watermark also does not prove that content is human-made, because another AI provider may have generated it.
SynthID remains the central safeguard
Google DeepMind developed SynthID to place hard-to-see patterns in generated content. The company has expanded it across images, audio, video and text. Its purpose is to support identification after media has been downloaded and shared, where a platform label may disappear.
No watermark is perfect. Cropping, heavy editing, re-encoding and deliberate attacks can affect detection systems, while false or inconclusive readings need careful handling. Google describes SynthID as one part of a broader transparency approach rather than absolute proof suitable for every forensic or legal decision.
C2PA serves a related but different role. It uses signed credentials to describe content history and editing. Provenance can help establish which tool produced a file, but users and platforms must preserve and display the information for it to remain useful.
New Credentio library planned
Google is also open-sourcing a library called Credentio. The company says it will help developers build local validation into applications. Local verification could make provenance checks faster and less dependent on sending sensitive media to a remote service, though developers will need clear documentation and secure implementation.
Open tools may also let independent researchers test reliability. Transparency about detection confidence, supported transformations and failure cases will be important if platforms use the system for moderation or labeling.
What publishers should do
Newsrooms and creators should retain original files, generation records and licensing information even when the visible mark is disabled. An invisible signal is not a substitute for editorial disclosure. When an AI-generated illustration could be mistaken for documentary photography, a clear caption remains the most understandable safeguard for readers.
The Google AI watermark setting is a usability change rather than the end of AI labeling. Visible branding becomes optional, while SynthID and C2PA remain active.
