Australia’s levels of life dissatisfaction have risen sharply, with new analysis suggesting that nearly 2.2 million people aged 15 and over are now living below a “wellbeing poverty” line.

According to the reported analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics general social survey data, the share of Australians rating their overall life satisfaction at four or below out of 10 has doubled over the past decade. In 2025, that group made up 9.7% of the population, or about one in 10 Australians.

The figures point to a widening gap in personal wellbeing even as some social factors appear to offer a counterweight. The report says community cohesion and trust are associated with higher happiness scores, suggesting that people who feel more connected to those around them may be better protected from the effects of financial or social strain.
