A young shepherd who was allegedly gang-raped by 12 men in the Cholistan desert in Bahawalnagar district died on Tuesday at Bahawal Victoria Hospital, according to a police spokesperson cited by Dawn.
The victim had been abducted on July 1 from Toba Jinnawala near Chak 289/HR, where he was grazing more than 40 sheep, the spokesperson said. He was reportedly taken away by a suspect riding a motorcycle. After eight days, on July 9, his brother Mohsin went to see him at Toba Jinnawala and found him in a serious condition.
According to the information relayed to police, the youth told his brother that 12 men had assaulted him after giving him an intoxicating drink. He also said that the attackers stole his 40 sheep. Seven of the suspects were identified in the FIR, the police spokesperson said.
Mohsin moved his brother to Bahawal Victoria Hospital and informed Marot police about the incident on July 15, after which a case was registered against 12 suspects. Police said a post-mortem was arranged at the hospital. The spokesperson also claimed that five of the suspects had been arrested.
The report, based on a monitored public feed from Dawn Home, also noted other violent crime and accident cases reported in south Punjab. In Vehari, a baker employee, Habibur Rehman, died in the burn unit of Nishtar Hospital Multan after suffering injuries in a gas cylinder fire that had also affected 13 other people, including three children, six days earlier. His body was later shifted to Vehari.
Separately, police in Jalalpur Pirwala booked a man for allegedly raping a girl at gunpoint in a mango orchard on Tuesday. The victim was sent for medical examination, while the suspect had not been arrested at the time of the report.
Police in Vehari also registered a case after two men allegedly abducted a 13-year-old girl from fields near her house in Chak 251/EB early on Monday. The girl, daughter of a labourer, was reportedly taken when she went outside. The suspects had not been arrested.
In another case, three people, including a woman, were allegedly tortured by six suspects in a land dispute in Chak 271/EB, within the jurisdiction of Gaggo Mandi police. Police said they had booked Nadeem Jammu, Sarwar, Anwar and others, but no arrests had been made.
