Resilience in the Face of Rising Diesel Costs

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) demonstrated resilience as it concluded its second consecutive session in the green on Tuesday. This positive trend occurred against a backdrop of rising fuel costs and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting investor sentiment. Despite an increase in diesel and petrol prices, which heightens business costs and inflationary pressures, the KSE-100 index closed at 171,402.08 points, up 248.92 points, or 0.15 percent. The market exhibit fluctuations, reaching a high of 171,680.74 points and a low of 170,866.94.

Key Developments

Market Performance

Investor sentiment remained mixed as several factors influenced trading activity:

- Easing Oil Prices: International oil prices have shown signs of easing, providing a glimmer of hope for investors facing inflation concerns.

- Geopolitical Factors: Expectations surrounding a potential US-Iran de-escalation have contributed to alleviating worries over inflation and Pakistan’s external economic standing. However, continuous geopolitical uncertainties continued to temper broader market gains.

Topline Securities Ltd noted the factors supporting market sentiment, specifically the contributions of major stocks such as:

- Mari Energies

- Pakistan Petroleum

- Hub Power

- Fauji Cement Company Ltd

- Lucky Cement

These companies collectively boosted the index by 233 points, highlighting strong participation from value hunters in the market.

Caution Among Investors

Despite these positive contributions, caution prevailed among investors due to the volatile nature of the market and the bleak economic environment. Some major detractors, including:

- Bank Al-Habib

- Fauji Fertiliser

- MCB Bank

negatively impacted the index by approximately 172 points.

Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd, commented on the initial fragility of market sentiment but noted that value hunters played a crucial role in lifting the index. "As Saudi Arabia seeks to resume pipeline flows and diplomatic engagements around the Strait of Hormuz gain traction, market confidence is gradually recovering," he stated. Najib emphasized the importance of these diplomatic efforts, particularly with media reports suggesting Iran’s willingness to reopen the strait if the US eases military pressure.

Corporate Highlights

In corporate news, Sitara Petroleum Service Ltd disclosed its fiscal year earnings, reporting an impressive increase of 69 percent year-over-year, totaling Rs4,976 million with an earnings per share (EPS) of Rs3.0. However, the company faced challenges in its 4QFY26 earnings, which saw a decrease of 10 percent YoY to Rs570 million, primarily due to inventory losses and reduced GO supplies. They also declared a final cash dividend of Re1 per share, signaling commitment to shareholder value.

Market Outlook

Investor participation dwindled as trading volume fell by 7.36 percent to 641.8 million shares, with a decline in traded value of 8.13 percent to Rs18.4 billion. This retreat reflects growing concerns about the impact of rising diesel prices on business operations and overall economic stability. With ongoing geopolitical uncertainties looming, traders are advised to keep a close eye on market developments to navigate this challenging environment effectively.

As the PSX continues to display resilience amidst economic pressures, the role of value hunters will be crucial in shaping market trajectories in the coming weeks.
