A NASA-supported robotic servicing mission is now on its way to geosynchronous Earth orbit after launching from Cape Canaveral on July 21 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The Mission Robotic Vehicle, or MRV, is carrying the Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites payload, known as RSGS. According to NASA’s public update, the spacecraft is headed for a high-altitude orbit where it will use advanced robotics to service other spacecraft. The mission is designed to demonstrate in-space robotic capabilities that could support satellite servicing operations in orbit.
NASA says RSGS draws on the agency’s expertise in robotics for space applications. The mission is intended to show how robotic tools can be used beyond Earth to assist with spacecraft maintenance and related tasks in geosynchronous orbit, where many satellites operate.
