Researchers have mapped the microbiome of the Great Barrier Reef in a new study that has revealed an unexpectedly vast hidden world of marine life, including more than 500 bacterial species previously unknown to science.
According to a monitored public feed from The Guardian World, the research examined DNA taken from seawater samples collected across 48 reefs. The analysis uncovered 808,585 viral genomes, which scientists estimate represent 362,802 distinct viruses. The same work also identified more than 500 new bacterial species not previously documented.
The findings arrive more than a decade after the human microbiome was comprehensively mapped, extending that kind of large-scale genomic survey to one of the world’s most important reef systems.
