Advanced Micro Devices said it will sell Anthropic tens of billions of dollars’ worth of AI servers and invest up to $5 billion in the Claude maker, in a deal that could help the chipmaker expand its presence in a market still led by Nvidia.
The announcement, reported on Wednesday and based on a monitored public feed, adds to a growing pattern in the artificial intelligence sector in which chipmakers back major AI companies that also rank among their biggest customers. AMD’s move comes as Nvidia has reportedly been in talks to invest $30 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
Under the agreement, Anthropic plans to buy up to two gigawatts of AMD’s latest Instinct MI450 chips, with deliveries beginning in the first half of 2027, according to the feed summary. AMD executives have previously said that 1 gigawatt of computing power can cost double-digit billions of dollars, underscoring the scale of the commitment.
AMD’s investment in Anthropic will be linked to certain deployment milestones, meaning the full backing is expected to depend on how the rollout progresses. The arrangement also gives Anthropic more access to computing capacity at a time when demand for AI infrastructure remains intense.
Anthropic has become one of Silicon Valley’s leading AI startups, helped by strong uptake of enterprise-focused products such as Claude Code. The company has been working to ease compute shortages as it scales its services. Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and head of compute, said access to computing power is central to keeping Claude competitive and meeting customer demand.
The startup has already been moving quickly to add capacity. In May, it agreed to rent the full computing output of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, which houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and adds 300 megawatts of capacity. Separately, Meta Platforms is also in talks to lease computing power to Anthropic in a potential deal worth up to $10 billion over two years, according to a source familiar with the matter cited in the feed.
The AMD partnership follows a similar multi-year agreement the company announced with OpenAI in October, which it said could bring in tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue and gives the ChatGPT maker the option to buy up to roughly 10% of the chipmaker.
Investors appeared to welcome the latest deal. AMD shares rose 0.5% in early trading, and the stock has more than doubled this year, according to the feed.
