Why You Sleep Poorly on the First Night Away From Home

A comfortable hotel bed does not guarantee a good night's sleep. Many people take longer to drift off, wake more often and sleep less deeply during their first night in an unfamiliar room. Researchers call this pattern the first-night effect, and studies suggest it is a common response rather than a personal failure to relax.
The effect is especially relevant for travelers arriving before an interview, examination, wedding or important meeting. Understanding what is happening can reduce the anxiety that makes the problem worse and help people plan around a night that may be less restorative than usual.
What is the first-night effect?
Sleep researchers use the term for measurable changes that occur when someone sleeps in a new environment. Ahmad Mayeli, a psychiatry professor and sleep researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, told the Associated Press that most people experience it at some level. On average, people may get about 20 to 30 minutes less sleep in a new place.
The difference is not limited to total time. Research has found greater activity in the frontal lobe during sleep, suggesting that part of the brain remains more alert. A person may therefore sleep more lightly even when they do not remember being awake for long periods.
Why the brain stays watchful
One explanation is that the brain treats an unfamiliar environment as a potential risk. Anna Wick, a senior sleep researcher at the University of Freiburg, described it as an adaptive vigilance response. Modern hotel locks and smoke alarms may signal safety consciously, but the sleeping brain still reacts to novelty.
That response can be influenced by age. Researchers cited by AP said the effect tends to be stronger in children, adolescents and older adults, while people in their twenties may be less affected. Individual anxiety, travel fatigue and ordinary sleep habits also matter.
The room is only part of the problem
Travel can disrupt sleep even without crossing time zones. A flashing light, hallway noise, unfamiliar temperature or different pillow can create small interruptions. Tension during a family visit or worry about the next day's schedule may add another layer of alertness.
Expectations can turn the experience into a cycle. Someone who remembers sleeping badly on previous trips may begin monitoring every sound and calculating the hours left before morning. That effort to force sleep increases arousal, making natural sleep harder.
Some travelers experience the opposite. A long journey may leave them exhausted, or being away from daily responsibilities may feel calming. The first-night effect is common, not universal, and one poor night does not automatically indicate chronic insomnia.
How to sleep better in a new place
Basic sleep habits remain useful. Keep the room cool and dark, limit bright screens before bed and maintain a familiar bedtime where possible. Begin those habits before the trip rather than expecting one perfect routine to solve the problem after arrival.
Make the space feel less novel. Spend a little time reading quietly in the room, bring a familiar pillowcase or small object and arrange essential items before getting into bed. Earplugs or an eye mask can reduce environmental disruption, although they cannot remove every cause.
If thoughts about sleep become repetitive, acknowledge the worry without treating it as a prediction. Slow breathing, a familiar mental image or a calm routine can lower the feeling that sleep is a test. Avoid repeatedly checking the clock, which often adds pressure.
Plan around an important morning
The most practical advice may be to arrive one night early when the next day matters. The effect usually fades after the first night as the environment becomes familiar. An extra evening gives the brain time to adjust before performance becomes important.
A single shorter night is generally manageable, and people often recover quickly. Persistent sleep trouble, loud snoring, breathing pauses or daytime impairment deserves medical attention because those symptoms may point to a separate sleep disorder.
The first-night effect explains why an expensive room can still produce a restless night. It also offers reassurance: the response is common, usually temporary and easier to manage when travelers prepare for it instead of fighting it.
