A judicial magistrate in Karachi on Tuesday sent two relatives of a murdered three-year-old girl to police custody in connection with a case in Quaidabad, where investigators say the child was kidnapped and later found dead in a gunny bag outside her home last month.
The remand was granted by the judicial magistrate (Malir) after the investigating officer produced the suspects — identified in the feed summary as a male cousin and a sister-in-law of the victim’s father — and requested physical custody for interrogation, according to a monitored public feed from Dawn Pakistan.
The case centres on three-year-old Kalsoom, who was reportedly taken from her home in Muslimabad Colony on June 24. Her body was later recovered in a gunny bag placed just outside the family residence. Police have said the matter involves both rape and murder allegations, though the summary does not indicate any judicial finding on those claims.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the investigating officer told the court that the relatives of the victim’s father were involved in the crime and said the suspects had confessed during initial questioning, according to the feed summary. The magistrate granted four days of police custody and asked the investigating officer to produce the suspects at the next hearing along with a progress report.
A day earlier, police had alleged that the woman suspect killed the child amid longstanding family disputes, while the male suspect later carried out an assault on the body in an apparent attempt to make the case appear to be a rape-cum-murder and to mislead the family and divert public attention. Police also said the male suspect told investigators that his sister and the child’s mother had a history of domestic conflict and frequent arguments.
According to that account, the female suspect allegedly brought Kalsoom to her home, strangled her, placed the body in a gunny bag and then asked the male suspect to dispose of it. The case has been registered at Quaidabad police station under sections 363, 376, 377, 201, 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
