Russia launched a broad wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine overnight, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens, according to officials cited by BBC News and relayed in a monitored public feed.
The attacks hit several cities and regions, with casualties reported in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy. In the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, four people were killed after what regional officials described as an attack on a postal terminal in the city’s suburbs. Kharkiv regional head Oleh Syniehubov said the dead were men aged between 24 and 62. Several of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.
In Kyiv, an elderly woman was killed during the overnight strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assault on the capital was among the “most massive ballistic attacks” since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. The Ukrainian military said air defences in Kyiv shot down 18 of 41 missiles and intercepted 108 drones. The city and surrounding areas were hit by a range of weapons, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, as well as 125 drones, according to the Ukrainian air force.
Two more people were killed in Zaporizhzhia in the south, while one person died in Sumy in the north-east, bringing the reported death toll to at least eight. Ukrainian authorities said a number of areas in the Kyiv region were also struck overnight.
Late on Sunday, Ukraine’s navy said five people were killed when a Turkish-owned civilian cargo ship carrying grain was hit by Russian missiles in the Black Sea. Russia had not commented on that claim, the feed said.
The exchange of strikes was not limited to Ukraine. Zelensky said Ukraine had hit three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and three oil depots in Russia’s southern Stavropol region, adding that these were targets that “finance Russian aggression.” The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which moves Kazakhstan’s Caspian oil to Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, said its terminal was also hit. It said two tankers were damaged and loading operations were suspended, though there were no injuries or oil spills.
In a Telegram message, Zelensky said that over the past week Russia had used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs and 99 missiles of various types against Ukraine.
