Ben Duckett struck a record-setting 141 at Lord’s to steer England to a 27-run victory over India on Sunday, sealing a 2-1 win in the three-match one-day international series, according to Dawn Sport.
Duckett’s innings became the highest individual score by a man in an ODI at Lord’s, surpassing Vivian Richards’s 138 for the West Indies against England in the 1979 World Cup final. His commanding display helped England pile up 387-3, also a new ODI record at the venue.
England’s innings was built around a dominant opening stand of 192 between Duckett and Jacob Bethell, who made 91. The pair laid the platform for a late surge, with Joe Root unbeaten on 74 and Jos Buttler blasting 41 not out from just 13 deliveries. England added 82 runs in the final five overs to push the total beyond India’s reach.
India still had hopes during a strong chase, led by Rohit Sharma’s 138. It was the first ODI century by an Indian batter at Lord’s. Sharma combined in key partnerships, putting on 147 with captain Shubman Gill, who scored 77, and 113 with Virat Kohli, who made 74.
But the target of 388 remained steep, and India’s momentum faded when Sharma was bowled by Bethell with the score on 260-2. Sam Curran then applied further pressure with four wickets for 75 runs as India finished on 360-7. England’s attack also had to contend with the absence of India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was sidelined by a knee injury, and all-rounder Washington Sundar, who missed out with hamstring trouble.
The match was played with both teams wearing black armbands in memory of West Indies great Garry Sobers, who died earlier this week aged 89. England captain Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bat.
Bethell’s 91 was a notable response after modest scores in the first two matches of the series. Duckett, meanwhile, brought up his fourth ODI century in 37 matches and continued England’s strong batting display in the series decider.
