Gilgit-Baltistan’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has picked 12 members of the assembly to serve as ministers in his cabinet, according to a notification issued on Wednesday.
The notification, issued by the Services and General Administration Department and the Cabinet Department, says the GB governor appointed the ministers on the chief minister’s advice. It names eight lawmakers from Hussain’s Pakistan Peoples Party and four from the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party.
The PPP members listed are Zulfiqar Ali Murad, Syed Jalal Shah, Muhammad Ali Akhtar, Naiknam Karim, Iqbal Hassan, Raja Nasir Khan, Muhammad Naseem and Syed Tauqeer Mehdi. The IPP members named in the notification are Aman Ali, Asad Shafiq, Anwar Ali and Muhammad Dilpazeer.
The notification did not assign any portfolios to the new ministers.
According to the feed report, the four IPP lawmakers had contested the June 7 elections as independents before later joining their current party. The latest cabinet line-up comes after the formation of the government in Gilgit-Baltistan, where the PPP is the largest party in the assembly.
The current GB Assembly includes 14 members from the PPP, nine from the PML-N, seven from the IPP, one member from the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen and one PTI-backed independent lawmaker. A by-election is also pending for the GBA-9 Skardu-III seat, after the GB Supreme Appellate Court disqualified PPP candidate Fida Muhammad Nashad over the concealment of assets in nomination papers, the report said.
The election commission has not yet announced a date for the by-poll. The feed report also noted that the PML-N and IPP had backed the PPP in the elections for chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker, while the PML-N decided to sit in opposition.
