Nadra official goes missing in Karachi, family approaches police for his recovery

A family in Karachi has approached police over the disappearance of a National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) official, seeking his recovery after he was reported missing on Monday evening.

According to an application seen by Dawn and addressed to Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho, the missing man is Fayyaz Ahmed Janjhi, an assistant director at Nadra and the younger son of Sohail Sangi, a veteran journalist and member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP). The family said Janjhi had been untraceable since 6:30pm on July 20.

The application said the family had repeatedly tried to contact him, but his phone remained switched off. His colleagues were also approached, and they said he had left his office near Ayesha Manzil at around 6pm on Monday. He did not arrive home, the application stated.

Sangi requested police to register a complaint regarding his son’s disappearance and help locate him. He also said that his son and the family had no known enmity with anyone.

Janjhi’s elder brother, Riaz Sohail, who is a senior journalist with the BBC, told Dawn that the family had submitted the application to the Sindh IG, after which the case was assigned to Central Senior Superintendent of Police Imran Khan.

The case has also drawn public concern. The HRCP posted on X that it was deeply concerned about the disappearance of Fayaz Janjhi, describing him as a Nadra officer and the son of HRCP council member Sohail Sangi. The rights body urged the Sindh government to speed up efforts to recover him safely.

Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jamili also said on X that he was concerned about Janjhi’s disappearance and called on the Sindh government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action and intensify efforts to secure his safe and swift recovery.

This report is based on a monitored public feed and the published account from Dawn.
