MoU signed with Chinese firm for EV charging stations

Islamabad: The government says it is pushing ahead with plans to expand electric mobility in Pakistan, with a new memorandum of understanding aimed at building more EV charging stations across the country.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government is committed to changing the transport sector through support for electric vehicles and the soon-to-be-introduced Battery Energy Storage System Policy. According to the monitored public feed from Dawn Business, he said the policy is expected to help create the conditions for wider adoption of electric mobility in Pakistan and encourage investment in the sector.

Khan was speaking at the signing of an MoU between StarCharge Energy Pakistan and China’s Bahum Global Ltd. The agreement is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s EV ecosystem through international cooperation, technology transfer and local manufacturing.

Under the deal, Bahum Global Ltd will provide technical support and work with StarCharge Energy to set up EV charging stations in different parts of the country. The planned expansion of charging infrastructure is meant to make electric vehicles easier and more practical for consumers as the market develops.

The government has also been highlighting local manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries as part of its broader industrial strategy. Khan said this approach would help attract foreign investment and support the development of a more sustainable industrial base.

He added that greater use of electric vehicles could reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported petroleum products, which would help lower the import bill while also supporting environmental sustainability and energy security.

The MoU is being described as an early step toward a wider EV framework that links foreign collaboration with domestic capacity-building. For now, the focus remains on building the charging network needed to support future demand.
