Lloyd’s of London has said its former chief executive, John Neal, breached compliance rules by failing to disclose a “close relationship” with a female colleague, a move the insurance market said created a potential conflict-of-interest concern.
According to a report from the Council of Lloyd’s, the body responsible for the market’s management and supervision, the organization concluded that Neal did not properly disclose the relationship. The council said the undisclosed connection raised compliance issues, but it could not find conclusive evidence that the pair were romantically involved.
The investigation also found no conclusive evidence of process failures connected to the colleague’s promotion during Neal’s time in charge, the report said.
The findings add to scrutiny over governance standards at one of the world’s best-known insurance institutions. Lloyd’s said the matter was assessed through its internal oversight process, and the results were drawn from a monitored public feed based on reporting by The Guardian Business.
