Liverpool owner in talks to sell stake to QPR co-owner Amit Bhatia

Liverpool’s owner Fenway Sports Group is in talks to sell a significant minority stake in the club to a consortium led by Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia, according to a report monitored from a public feed.

The proposed transaction is backed by Bhatia’s father-in-law, Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian steel billionaire, the feed summary said. The Guardian reported that FSG confirmed to the Financial Times that it had opened negotiations with the Bhatia-led group over a potential share sale.

If completed, the deal would value Liverpool at about £4.5bn, according to the same report. No further terms of the possible investment were provided in the feed, and it was not clear how large the minority stake could be or how the ownership structure might change.

Liverpool have been owned by FSG since 2010. The Boston-based group also owns the Boston Red Sox and has previously sought outside investment in Liverpool, including a partial sale process announced in 2023. The new talks, as described in the monitored feed, suggest fresh interest in bringing in a minority partner rather than pursuing a full sale.

Bhatia has been involved in QPR’s ownership for years, and his name has been linked with sports investment activity in the past. Mittal, whose wealth stems from the global steel business, has long been associated with QPR through his family connection. The feed did not say whether either man would take an active role in Liverpool’s day-to-day running if a deal were agreed.

The reported valuation would place Liverpool among the most highly valued clubs in world football. However, the feed did not include any timeline for a possible agreement, and it is not known whether talks are exclusive or if other bidders are involved.
