ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Monday took up a set of appointments and confirmations for the country’s superior judiciary, including vacancies in the provincial high courts and the Islamabad High Court, according to a monitored public feed based on Dawn Pakistan.
Meeting under Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi in the Supreme Court’s Conference Room, the commission spent three separate sessions between 2pm and 5:30pm reviewing the confirmation of additional judges, the tenure of constitutional benches of the Sindh High Court, and nominations for vacant judgeship positions.
The commission recommended a six-month extension for Justice Khalid Hussain Shahani as an additional judge of the Sindh High Court. It did not, however, confirm another additional judge of the same court, Justice Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah.
For the Sindh High Court, the JCP recommended the appointment of Advocate Muhammad Humayon Khan, District and Sessions Judge Suresh Kumar, and Advocate Dr Shah Nawaz Memon as additional judges. Two other vacancies could not be filled because the nominees did not secure the required majority of the commission’s total membership.
The commission also backed a three-month extension in the term of the Sindh High Court’s constitutional benches.
In Islamabad, the JCP recommended three names for appointment as additional judges of the Islamabad High Court: Advocate Ayyaz Shaukat, District and Sessions Judge Shahrukh Arjumand, and Advocate Umair Majeed Malik.
The commission also considered confirmations in the provincial high courts. By majority decision, it recommended four additional judges of the Punjab High Court for elevation as permanent judges after reviewing the relevant data forms, antecedents and other material placed before it. Those recommended were Justice Farah Jamshed, Justice Inaam Ullah Khan, Justice Sabit Ullah Khan and Justice Aurangzeb.
The meeting was attended by the commission’s members except for Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Senator Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, both of whom represent the PTI and were absent from the proceedings, the feed said.
According to the report, the chief justices of the four high courts had already forwarded nominations for the vacant posts. The commission’s decisions followed its examination of the material submitted for each case.
