HYDERABAD: Industrial activity in the SITE area has been badly affected after recent heavy rains left roads flooded, drainage systems damaged and electricity supply disrupted, according to local trade and industry representatives quoted by Dawn Business.

The Hyderabad SITE Association of Trade and Industry said the monsoon spell caused rainwater to enter several factories, forcing work to a halt in parts of the area. Business leaders also said that prolonged power outages added to the problems, leaving the industrial zone without electricity for more than 24 hours after the rains.

The association said it had repeatedly asked for drainage repairs and road improvements before the monsoon, but no timely action was taken. It warned that poor infrastructure continues to undermine production and makes it harder for labour to reach workplaces during rainy weather.

In a joint statement, chairman Zubair Ghanghra, senior vice chairman Amir Shahab, vice chairman Essar Kumar and general secretary Mohammad Shahid Qaimkhani urged the Sindh government to take concrete steps to keep industrial units running during future monsoon seasons.

The SITE area remains one of Hyderabad’s key industrial zones. The association said 360 units are currently operating there, compared with 425 previously, and added that the area contributes Rs1bn in taxes to the government.

The latest disruption highlights a recurring challenge for industrial operations in Hyderabad: when roads, drains and electricity fail at the same time, factory output slows quickly and workers face major difficulties reaching their jobs.

For industry stakeholders, the immediate concern is not only restoring normal operations after the rain, but also preventing a repeat of the same damage when the next monsoon arrives.
