Demos in Gilgit against prolonged power outages

Residents in Gilgit took to the streets on Tuesday after prolonged electricity outages left several neighbourhoods without power for more than six hours, according to a monitored public feed based on Dawn Pakistan reporting.

In the hot weather, protesters gathered in different parts of the city and shouted slogans against the authorities. In Jutial, they burned tyres and blocked the main Quaid-i-Azam Road at Public Chowk for several hours, demanding that the government restore regular electricity supply.

The disruption has also affected water availability in some areas, adding to residents’ difficulties. Protesters said the prolonged outages had made daily life unbearable and accused the Gilgit-Baltistan government of failing to address the problem.

Similar demonstrations were reported in Kundas, Danyore and Amphary. At the RCC Bridge in Kundas, a large number of women assembled and blocked the KIU Road, also pressing officials to resolve the power crisis without delay. They called for uninterrupted electricity and water supply in their neighbourhoods.

The protests reflect mounting frustration over repeated outages in Gilgit and the strain caused when electricity cuts also interrupt water supply. No official response from the authorities was mentioned in the feed summary.
