Six climbers from four countries reached the summit of Gasherbrum-II, the 8,035-metre peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range, on Tuesday, according to expedition organiser Imagine Nepal.

The team said all of its members and Sherpa guides made it to the top at 10am. The summiters were Wang Zhong of China, Sim Phei Sunn of Singapore, Valentyn Sypavin of Ukraine, and Nepali Sherpa guides Phur Galjen Sherpa, Aangdu Sherpa and Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa.

The climb carried several personal milestones. Wang Zhong has now completed 12 of the 14 eight-thousanders, with Broad Peak and Shishapangma left on his list. Sim Phei Sunn became the first climber from Singapore to summit Gasherbrum-II, according to the team. For Valentyn Sypavin, the ascent marked his sixth 8,000-metre summit this year.

Phur Galjen Sherpa completed his 13th 8,000-metre summit on Gasherbrum-II and is expected to lead the team on Gasherbrum-I next as he pursues a full collection of the world’s 14 highest mountains. Imagine Nepal also said he has previously climbed Yalung Khang, an 8,505-metre peak in Nepal.

Aangdu Sherpa was on his third Gasherbrum-II summit, while Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa has previously climbed K2 twice and Broad Peak. For him, Tuesday’s ascent was his third 8,000-metre peak in Pakistan.

The team’s first attempt on July 18 did not succeed because of deep snow and a shortage of rope, according to Imagine Nepal. On Monday, the climbers set out early for a final push from Camp 3 and later joined an Elite Exped team on the route.

Imagine Nepal said the result reflected strong teamwork and high-altitude experience.
