Balochistan gives Rs3 billion to railways for train project in Quetta city

Balochistan has provided Rs3 billion to Pakistan Railways for a shuttle train service in Quetta, as provincial governments begin contributing to railway upgrades and station restoration projects in different parts of the country, according to Pakistan Railways Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Hafeezullah.

Speaking to Dawn, Hafeezullah said the Balochistan government’s funding will support the operation of the People’s Train on an around 15-kilometre route in Quetta city. He said dedicated engines and coaches have been arranged for the service, and six stations in Quetta have been rehabilitated for the project. The train is expected to begin operations on Aug 14.

He said the cooperation is not limited to Balochistan. The Punjab government is working with Pakistan Railways on master plans for the restoration, conservation and modernisation of Lahore and Taxila railway stations, while the Sindh government has already provided Rs750 million for the rehabilitation and upgrade of Rohri/Sukkur station. Another instalment of the same amount is expected soon, he added.

According to Hafeezullah, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also indicated support, with the provincial cabinet approving plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Pakistan Railways for improvements to rail infrastructure and related facilities.

The railway chief said the projects are part of a wider effort to preserve historic stations while improving passenger services. He said the plans for Lahore and Taxila were developed in line with instructions from the chief minister and railways minister, and are intended to maintain the original architectural character of the buildings while adding modern amenities, safer surroundings and facilities that would make the stations more welcoming for travellers and visitors.

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi also commented on the restoration plans, saying Lahore and Taxila stations are important symbols of Pakistan’s history, culture and national heritage. He thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for what he described as her support for the projects, and said the restored stations would combine heritage preservation with modern passenger facilities.

The Lahore plan includes structural strengthening, repairs to damaged portions, waterproofing, roof work, drainage improvements, heritage-style lighting, upgraded signage, refurbishment of the concourse and reservation office, a family lounge, an improved information desk, a history wall, platform restoration and new passenger seating and kiosks.

The Taxila plan calls for pedestrian walkways, organised parking, public washrooms, restoration of the historic ticket office, reuse of an old goods warehouse as a café and restaurant, stone paving, Victorian-style lighting, landscaped areas, safer movement for pedestrians, restoration of verandahs and platforms, and heritage displays linked to Taxila’s cultural legacy.
