Aurangzeb seeks $10bn support facility from US

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has asked the United States to extend a $10 billion Exchange Stabilisation Support Facility to help shore up the country’s economy, according to a report first noted by Reuters and later confirmed by officials at Pakistan’s embassy in Washington.

The request was made on Tuesday during Aurangzeb’s meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the feed summary said. Embassy officials confirmed that talks took place but did not provide further detail on the proposed facility. The US Treasury also declined to comment, according to the report.

In a separate official readout, Pakistan’s embassy said Aurangzeb had sought US backing for Pakistan’s “road-to-market” ambitions, framing the discussion around improved access to international capital markets, stronger foreign exchange reserves and better sovereign credit ratings. That statement, however, did not mention the reported $10 billion request.

According to the news agency cited in the feed, Islamabad is seeking a bilateral stabilisation facility with a maturity of up to five years. Such arrangements, typically linked to a country’s foreign exchange needs, can be used to support reserve levels, ease pressure on debt repayments and help steady financial conditions.

The proposed mechanism would be tied to the US Treasury’s Exchange Stabilisation Fund, which can be used to provide loans or other backstop support. These facilities are generally designed to reduce currency volatility and, when needed, help a partner country intervene in foreign exchange markets.

Diplomatic sources in Washington told Dawn there were “strong chances” that the request could be approved. One source said the Trump administration remained interested in engagement with Pakistan and had more than once signalled support for strengthening the country’s economy.
